One Response to “If I stream live video from my webcam at home to my website, how much bandwidth will that take?”
Several Factors:
1.) Bit rate of the stream
2.) Size of the video, (eg. 320 x 320, 640 x640, and so on)
3.) Depth of the video, some ccd chips are higher quality than others, and just like an still image, the level of compression will affect the amount of bandwidth that you use. A heavily compressed video will use far less bandwidth than an uncompressed video.
4.) Time of streaming, an hour, two, all day, given your scenario of 10 hours, using the above information you could use up to 5 or 6 gigs a month with a small bitrate heavily compressed video.
So, what kind of hosting does your website have, eg: how much monthly bandwidth? Knowing this helps because you can monitor most websites for bandwidth usage and safely drop your impact if you get too close to the limit because over bandwidth charges are pretty extreme in most cases.
Consider changing to a provider that has a higher per site bandwidth, like IceStorm or some of the others out there that have a pretty sweet deal on hosting and bandwidth.
Hope this helps.
